Music at Wynberg Girls’ Junior School

Music forms an integral part of life at WGJS. We have various groups where our learners perform together and learn how to interact through music. These groups include 2 choirs, a vocal ensemble, 2 marimba bands, 2 string ensembles, a clarinet choir and an orchestra.

Groups/Ensembles:

Choir

Over a hundred girls participate in our two choirs: Junior (Grades 1 to 3) and Senior (Grades 4 to 7). They perform at choir festivals around the peninsula, as well as at school functions and concerts, enthusiastically maintaining a high level of performance. B

Marimbas

Our marimba bands receive tuition under AmaAmbush Marimbas. They perform at school functions and the annual Cape Town Marimba Festival. The marimba items on our concert programmes are always met with much excitement! Each band consists of 8 members.

String Ensemble and Orchestra

Under the professional leadership of Miss Galliers, we have a large string department and these girls perform together in a junior and a senior string ensemble. We have a school orchestra, consisting of 40 members and they perform at school functions, local eisteddfodau and various conferences and concerts.

Clarinet Choir

The Clarinet Choir is a group of 5 advanced clarinet learners. Our clarinet choir, taught by Miss Stalling, received a diploma at the 2010 Cape Town Eisteddfod and was chosen to be part of Cool Classic Kidz, a program on Fine Music Radio, where they got to record in studio and was broadcasted on FMR.

Vocal Ensemble

Two years ago, Ms Lorna Field started a vocal ensemble at Wynberg. This small group travels to various shows and concerts to share their excellent productions with audiences all over the Cape.

Music Tuition:

Tuition is offered in piano, recorder, clarinet, flute, saxophone, guitar and violin. Learners can enrol for individual tuition from grade 3. Music theory and aural training form part of the lesson in all instruments. We encourage participation in external examinations.

Intro Course

Grade 1 and 2 learners are given the opportunity of an introductory music course offered at Wynberg and basic aural, theory and recorder skills. During the course of the year, our music teachers expose these learners to all the instruments we offer at Wynberg and therefore an informed decision can be made once a learner reaches grade 3 and is interested in furthering her music studies.

Class Music:

Class music is taught as part of the Arts & Culture learning area. Every class in the school has one music lesson per week. These lessons are based on the curriculum as set out by the Department of Education, and offers basic knowledge of music to every learner in the school.
