Full of beans in Grade R
Using the story of 'Jack and the Beanstalk' our Grade R's have learnt how beans grow, how to care for nature and examined various moral issues in the story.
We had fun decorating our fantasy corner and making the giant's castle and Jack's house. We explored measurement when we made an enormous beanstalk and measured how many children it would take to cover the length of the stalk. The girls also had to make enormous leaves and were taught about photosynthesis. They also learnt about healthy food and how pulses are a form of protein.
They were excited when their beans began to germinate and had to record the progress of their beans on a table. They were given diagrams showing the progresss of the bean and each diagram had a different colour attached. The students then had to match their bean to the appropriate picture and place the relevant coloured dot on their table. They also had to write in the date. They grasped the concept quickly and eagerly awaited moving to a different coloured dot! Early each morning before even unpacking their bags, they would check their beans, show their friends and explaint to their parents, what they were doing!

We have also acted out the story of 'Jack and the Beanstalk' using the piano and drama. They have had to make the various sounds, learn the giant's verse and examine the emotions of the story.
When the beans are big enough, we will be planting them in our school vegetable patch and the girls will be able to continue to watch them grow. Hopefully we will be able to harvest the beans and cook them for eating!

Grade R and the Readathon
The girls were very excited about dressing up for our annual Readathon. The theme of 'Around the World with Books' was a little difficult for them to interpret but after some discussion they were clearer on what they could wear.
Many girls came dressed as princessesand a few hired costumes. As they are unable to read for themselves, the educators read to the class.
One little girl who has recently learnt to read, brought a book and read to her friends. This started a chain reaction and ever since then many of the girls are now reading and sharing their stories with the class.
We also had great fun decorating our door using the story of 'The Aristocats'.They rolled up crepe paper and pasted these coloured pieces on the drawings of the different cats.. This activity was done with great care in order to keep the features of the cats. It was beautifully done and helped todevelop their fine motor skills.
Fun was had by all and reading is now a favourite activity!

Grade R's bake bread
Our girls learnt where flour comes from and who gives us the different ingredients that we put into bread. they then had the opportunity to make bread dough and their own breadrolls. They were fascinated by how the dough changed as it proved. They also seemed to enjoy the feeling of the dough and liked kneading it. Tehy were each given their buttered roll to eat whilst it was still warm. They were delightedwith the taste and wanted to do the activity all over again! They took the recipe home and will then be able to try it out with their families!
