SUCCESS Centre
(Success Unlimited in a Child-Centred Support System)
Wynberg Girls' Junior School has a SUCCESS Centre, which incorporates the following areas of support for all learners:
Learning Support
Educators may detect learners with learning difficulties in the areas of literacy and numeracy. These learners will then be discussed, on an individual basis, with the school-based educator support team. The learner will then be fully assessed by the learning support educator, together with an interview with the parent/s, in order to ascertain the particular area of difficulty. Additional learning support will then be given to the learner, either on a one-to-one basis, or in small groups. Our learning support always aims to remove or lessen any barriers to learning, be they within the child, or within the environment in which the child lives and learns. Should it be considered necessary, referral to external professionals will be recommended.
SUCCESS Centre Volunteers
Parents of - or family connected to - girls at the school volunteer to assist in our SUCCESS Centre. The SUCCESS Centre Volunteer Programme aims to support our school in raising levels of achievement in language (both reading and writing) and numeracy, through the provision of volunteer support. We also aim to improve the self-esteem and confidence of our learners.
The SUCCESS Centre Volunteer Programme benefits our learners in many ways, including providing learners with interested and committed adults and positive role models, allowing more individual support and attention for learners, providing learners with regular opportunities for discussion on a one to one basis, to improve their communication skills.
Extension Programme
Educators may identify learners who would benefit from additional stimulation. These learners are recommended to the Extension Programme, which promotes intellectual and creative challenge, is cross-disciplinary, holistic and skills based, promoting the spirit of enquiry, questioning and curiosity.
Counselling
We have the benefit of a full-time clinical social worker, who is involved in individual counselling as well as parental- and teacher-support. Also offered is therapeutic group work for emotional support or where there are behavioural concerns.
Additional areas which are focussed on include:
Where necessary, referral to external agencies will also be facilitated by the social worker
